Reporter Kevin Smith wrote an article in
September 1998 about Evel Knievel's poor
health situation. The situation seems to
have changed somewhat!
KNIEVEL CONSIDERS NEW VENUES FOR A 200ft
LEAP.
Gary Barak reports on the latest news about
the King of Stunts. July 2002.
Evel Knievel has revealed new details of
an astonishing plan to make a comeback with
the biggest jump of his life. The once great
man who in his heyday had one of the most
famous names in the world, was speaking
at the launch of a new Knievel-branded pick-up
truck. He insisted that he will jump a "big
V-twin motorcycle" a distance of over
200ft next year.
The best he ever managed at the peak of
his fame was around 140ft.
Knievel has suffered a string of health
problems in recent years (see Evel
Knievel) including hepatitis, diabetes
and a liver transplant. He is clearly not
fit enough to attempt such a leap so you
have to ask the question, is this a publicity
stunt to promote his new liveried 4x4 truck
or is he seriously considering a comeback
- I very much doubt it and hope for his
sake he keeps both of his scared feet firmly
on the ground.
Knievel however seems determined to go ahead
with the jump and suggested venues for the
stunt, including the launch of his Evel
Knievel Experience Cafe in Primm, Nevada
next Spring or next year's U.S. Sturgis
rally. He even said he was considering the
Colosseum in Rome!
The attempt would be financed by Fox TV
in return for exclusive rights to the event,
likely to be shown on a pay-per-view basis.
If anymore comes of this event, I will be
sure to inform the readers of the-vu as
and when it happens.
Gary Barak reports
from London, England where he conducts public
relations for automotive giants and remains
deeply involved with motor sports.
