Six Decades of Scooting

By Jeffrey the Barak. Towards the end of this ever-expanding article I have added edits updating to this year, but the article was first published in 2015 under the original title “Half a Century of Scooting”. Edits are ongoing, so this article is like a blog in itself. Written in 2015: I may have a… Read More Six Decades of Scooting

Ped Number Five, The Return Of The KickPed

By Jeffrey the Barak. I’ve been through a lot of scooters over the decades, at least nineteen kick scooters and five electrics. I usually buy new scooters, but this month, as I found myself wanting a 5th Ped-style scooter, I determined that the last new one may have already been manufactured by the current owners… Read More Ped Number Five, The Return Of The KickPed

KickPed and Know-Ped Family Reunion

By Jeffrey the Barak. A search for the word scooter on the-vu.com will reveal my passion and obsession for this type of vehicle. I much prefer scooters to bicycles, even though I have to admit I won’t be tackling a hundred mile charity ride on one. I have this year reviewed the KickPed, an amazing… Read More KickPed and Know-Ped Family Reunion

Scoot Like a Pro!

By Jeffrey the Barak. The most popular scooters in the United States are the small folding kind. The fact that they can fold up and be carried makes them so much more versatile than the scooter that remains it’s full deployed size and is basically a bicycle without the seat or the drivetrain. While you… Read More Scoot Like a Pro!

My road to the KickPed

By Jeffrey the Barak. Most kick scooter riders and potential kick scooter buyers are thousands of miles from being able to stroll into a certain New York City bike shop called NYCeWheels, but thanks to the Internet anyone is able to choose to buy the scooter that I have personally chosen as my current favorite… Read More My road to the KickPed

Why choose a kick scooter?

By Jeffrey the Barak. Ah, the humble kick scooter. Often maligned as inefficient, or silly looking, but to those of us who know, it is the ideal vehicle for short-distance, low to medium speed transportation. True, if you need to go ten miles, then a bicycle of any type will get you there with less… Read More Why choose a kick scooter?

KickPed versus Xootr, a scooter review

By Jeffrey the Barak. The KickPed is a custom Know-Ped, manufactured in the same factory in California, Patmont Motor Werks, but made to a lean and mean customized set of specifications, exclusively for one retail store, NYCeWheels in New York City. In some ways it is less of a scooter than the Know-Ped but the… Read More KickPed versus Xootr, a scooter review

Thank you everyone for the most useful tips on the internet that I have found. I am an Aussie, but former NYC resident. I rode my Xootr everywhere with my kids tagging on for the commute to preschool. It was great for NYC but I remember the vibration and at times yearned for tyres. I now live in Sydney and want to return to the world of kick scooting for my commute to work. Its about 10kms and involves a mix of roads, hills, pavement and bike paths. I want to be able to fold the scooter in case I need to catch public transport home. The Know-Ped was seeming the perfect balance. With Covid etc there are very few scooters available in Australia. It appears that Know-Ped might no longer be available. Xootr is out of stock. Is there another Xootr equivalent with tyres that you would recommend?

Hi Angela. I do not know what is available in Australia, but if it’s already there, you will have less import expense and complication. Join the facebook page “Let’s Kick Scoot” https://www.facebook.com/groups/letskickscoot and you will get help from your fellow Australian riders. Personally I would say for 10K and mixed terrain you will be happier with air tires. Let’s see what your new friends will advise.
